The trio of Chicagoans Josh Berman (cornet) and Jason Roebke (double bass) and English free improvisation legend Paul Lytton came together in 2016 for a short European tour. The trio presented music from Berman’s critically acclaimed recording A Dance and a Hop on Delmark Records. On the course of the tour, the music became freer and freer, finally arriving at a unique language where trad jazz and pure sound improv come together. It’s a truly fresh sound and context for these three improvisers. In 2017, they toured again and recorded their debut LP Trio Discrepancies which is now released on Astral Spirits.

A Dance and a Hop, Josh Berman’s last LP, was a paragon of pith. The Chicago-based cornetist is no stranger to free improvisation, but for that record he penned 11 brief themes elastic enough to be enhanced by three players resolving the material at the same time. The record’s success was due not only to Berman’s ripe for completion writing and piquant playing, but to bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Frank Rosaly’s imaginative responses to Berman’s telegraphic themes. But good things never last, and Rosaly exited the trio not long after the record’s release in order to move to Amsterdam. Trio Discrepancies is the culmination of what came next.

Faced with an upcoming European tour, Berman took a nervy step. He asked Paul Lytton, an English first-generation free improviser, to join the trio. This isn’t totally without precedent, since Lytton has previously played with another Chicagoan, Ken Vandermark. But Berman comes from a more recent cohort of players, this is a generation-jumping maneuver on a par with the Mekons recruiting Dick Taylor of the Pretty Things.
