Without the background heroes, many stories would not have happened, many works would not have been born... This is how mass culture is constructed, creating a distorted and simplified image of the world. The media is ruled by leaders and simple signs, everything else is pushed into the abyss of nothingness.
The bassoonist Karen Borca (born 1948), long-time partner of Cecil Taylor (in the years 1970-89), Jimmy Lyons (12 years of cooperation), Bill Dixon, Andrew Cyrille and William Parker, fits this description perfectly.
Chapeau bas for the organizers of the New York Vision Festival, who twice gave the festival stage to Karen Borca and NoBusiness Records, which released these recordings.
The album "Good News Blues" opens with the title track, performed by the trio in 1998. We hear William Parker on double bass and Paul Murphy on drums, two musicians with whom Karen Borca played in Jimmy Lyons' band - Wee Sneezawee.
In the second in the line-up, "Something", the band is joined by alto player Rob Brown.
The 18-minute "Cambiar" brings a reinforcement of the percussion section, with Susie Ibarra joining the quartet.
The album's closing track, "45 Hours / New Piece", is the only one on the album recorded during the 10th edition of the Vision Festival in 2005. In addition to the leader, we hear Rob Brown, as well as double bassists Reggie Workman and Todd Nicholson, and Taylor Baker on drums.

Karen Borca is something as rare as a bassoonists who has chosen free jazz as her field of expression. In case you are unfamiliar with Borca, who turns 76 this September, she is perhaps best known for her work with her husband, alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, appearing prominently on several recordings with Lyons as leader, such as Wee Sneezawee, a personal favorite.

Do takiego określenia - bohaterka drugiego planu - doskonale pasuje fagocistka Karen Borca (rocznik 1948), wieloletnia partnerka Cecila Taylora (w latach 1970-89), Jimmy'ego Lyonsa (12 lat współpracy), Billa Dixona, Andrew Cyrille'a czy Williama Parkera.
Chapeau bas przed organizatorami nowojorskiego Vision Festival, którzy dwukrotnie oddali festiwalową scenę Karen Borca i NoBusiness Records, które opublikowało te nagrania.
Płytę "Good News Blues" otwiera utwór tytułowy, wykonany w trio w 1998 roku. Słyszymy Williama Parkera na kontrabasie i Paula Murphy'ego za perkusją, dwóch muzyków, z którymi Karen Borca grała w zespole Jimmy'ego Lyonsa - Wee Sneezawee.
W drugim w stawce "Something" do zespołu dołącza alcista Rob Brown.
18-minutowy "Cambiar" przynosi wzmocnienie sekcji perkusyjnej, do kwartetu dołącza Susie Ibarra.
