In 1965, the John Coltrane Quartet was billed at Juan-Les- Pins to play two concerts, one on July 26, and the second the following day. Apparently someone from the festival asked Coltrane to perform "A Love Supreme", for the original LP still hadn't been commercialized in France. The story goes that the public wasn't ready for the music and didn't react well to the uninterrupted 50-minute performance, which was longer and more dissonant than the studio recording. The following day, on July 27, the quartet (which Coltrane insisted should be dressed in elegant black suits despite being in the hot European summer) performed a more accessible program including "Naima", "Ascension", "My Favorite Things" and a long version of "Impressions". While the July 26th live version of "A Love Supreme" is well known and has been recently reissued, the second concert of July 27th has been long unavailable in its complete form. The next day, on July 28th, the group was billed at the prestigious Salle Pleyel, in Paris, where they performed three tunes: "Ascension" and "Impressions" again, plus a very free version of Mongo Santamaría's "Afro Blue". The inclusion of "Ascension" on both of these concerts is noteworthy, for these are the only other known versions of the tune apart from the studio recordings.

"...Zapis dwóch niezwykłych koncertów Johna Coltrane'a zawierjący jedyne dwie znane kwartetowe interpretacje Ascencion - słynnej kompozycji Coltrane'a. Pierwszy z nich został zarejestrowany w Antibes, dzień po doskonale znanej rejestracji kwartetu z materiałem z A Love Supreme, drugi nagrany został z słynnej Salle Pleyel. Oba nagrania zostały zarejestrowane dzień po dniu - 27 i 28 lipca 1965 roku. Słuchacze otrzymują więc rzadką okazję zapoznać się jak - z dnia na dzień - zmieniała się muzyka mistrza, jak przebiegały interakcje wewnątrz kwartetu, w jaki sposób muzycy pracowali nad zarejestrowanym już w studiu, lecz rzadko ogrywanym na koncertach, materiałem. Publiczność - co słychać i na płycie - nie była przygotowana na taką muzykę kwartetu - tego (interakcji z publicznością) chyba najbardziej brakuje na tej - koncertowej przecież płycie. Muzycznie bowiem jest ona znakomita - mniejszy niż w studyjnym nagraniu skład sprawia iż muzyka Ascension jest klarowna i przejrzysta - nie mając gęstej faktury znanej z płyty nie traci jednak niż z drapieżności i energii oryginału.
