Editor's info:
A subsidiary of Archie Bleyer's Cadence label, Candid Records began producing albums in New York in 1960, with jazz writer and civil rights activist Nat Hentoff as the label's A&R director and linernote author. That same year, Candid released the star-studded August/September 1960 session of We Insist! Freedom Now Suite. Tenor-sax pioneer Coleman Hawkins, trumpeter Booker Little, and the then little-known singer Abbey Lincoln are on the album, which testifies to Roach's remarkable playing, his clout in the jazz world, and his politics. Earlier, in July 1960, Roach and Charles Mingus, in search of fair treatment for black performers, had organised a "rebel festival" to coincide with the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival, and this suite (with lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr.) is fuelled by the energies of the civil rights movement. The "rebellion" produced one album by the Jazz Artists Guild, titled Newport Rebels. Two of the songs from that album, "Cliff Walk" and "T'Aint Nobody's Bizness if I Do", belonged to a three-tune session (which took place on November 1, 1960) featuring Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln (the rest of the tunes from that album featured Charles Mingus with Roy Eldridge and were recorded on November 11, 1960 -Jo Jones was the drummer). The third song from that session, "Oh, Yeah, Oh Yeah", first appeared on a Candid compilation titled The Jazz Life. The complete session is added here as a bonus.
The complete original album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (Candid CJM8002), co-composed by Roach with Oscar Brown Jr. The album features a nonet + singer, including such luminaries as Coleman Hawkins and Booker Little, plus the wonderful vocals of Abbey Lincoln. As a bonus, we have added the complete session originally issued under the name of the Jazz Artists Guild, and which originally appeared divided onto two different albums: The Jazz Life (Candid CJM8019) and Newport Rebels (Candid CJM8022). Featuring a myriad of stars, this ....... więcej
