Lata 70. to w muzyce to czas rozwoju muzyki disco, rocka progresywnego oraz hard rocka. Tak dzieło się nie tylko w muzyce tzw. zachodu, podobnie było na innych kontynentach. Oczywiście miało to autonomiczny wymiar artystyczny.

Płyta "The Rough Guide To African Disco" prezentuje afrykańską odsłonę tego fenomenu muzycznego, na który w równym stopniu złożyły się pulsujący funk, zmysłowy soul, latynoskie i afrykańskie brzmienia jak soukous, afrobeat, ju-ju czy highlife roots. Niepowtarzalny styl muzyki i sposób ubierania (spodnie dzwony i wielkie kołnierzyki…) królowały wtedy w tanecznych klubach.
