Norwegians Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre have since 1998 produced their own brand of northern electronica-glitch-lowercase-noise music under the name Jazzkammer. The duo combines everything from location recordings and sine waves to turntabelism and guitar freak-outs in their music. Not caring much for the limited world of melody or rhythm, the Jazzkammer experience is all about texture, pulse and timbres. 2001 was The Year of Loud for Jazzkammer, with the remix project ”Rolex” (with mixes by Reynols, Thurston Moore, Francisco Lopez, Zbigniew Karkowski and others) and the ”Live at Molde International Jazz Festival” collaboration live album with Japanese noise-god Merzbow. NME described Jazzkammer as ”on a mission to rip your inner ear apart”, but that the music was ”oddly exhilerating”. In 2002 Smalltown Supersound released ”Pancakes”; and here John and Lasse exposed the more quiet side of their soundworld. It’s still clicks, drones and digital mayhem, but on a more gentle level. Layers of soft noise slowly mutates and unfolds into different abstract soundscapes, creating a feeling of cinema. Jazzkammer is: John Hegre Best known for his work with free-improvisation group Der Brief, whose debut album "Volum" received much praise. Has recently been working with the project Kaptein Kaliber, making waves in the the hip Bergen club scene. Kaptein Kaliber also made the fantastic "Dronningen" track on Monopot`s critically acclaimed "Something is Like Nothing Was" album. John is a skilled guitar player, but has for the last four years worked with electronics. He also works with sound design for theatre.
