John Coltrane had already recorded numerous sessions as a sideman by 1959, accompanying such illustrious figures as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Burrell, and Tadd Dameron, among others. He had also taped quartet albums some of which appeared under his own name while others were issued under the name of pianist Red Garland. Then came "Giant Steps", which was the confirmation of Coltrane’s importance in the jazz scene.

There, for the first time, all of the tunes were his, and his personal style seemed completely developed. Coltrane Jazz was the first album to hit the shelves after "Giant Steps" and marked the transition from his experimental groups to his final classic quartet. The next album (chronologically) in Trane’s discography was My "Favorite Things", one of his bestselling LPs ever. Although seemingly impossible to comprehend, this landmark jazz date made in 1960 was recorded in less than three days, during several marathon sessions that produced still more music that would later be issued on subsequent albums: "Coltrane Plays the Blues", "Coltrane’s Sound", and "Coltrane Legacy".
