Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) was one of the most important and influential figures in the history of American folk music. His apartment in Greenwich Village was a focal point for the 1960s folk revival. He is acknowledged as a mentor by many prominent folk artists of the last four decades. Bob Dylan, being one of them, devotes extensive attention to Van Ronk in his recent autobiography. Dave recorded his first album for Folkways Records in 1959. He released over 30 more in his lifetime. His distinct fingerstyle guitar playing, clever songwriting, raspy vocals and charismatic personality are the reasons for his longevity during his life and beyond. However, he was not as prolific a songwriter as some of the artists he inspired, he wasjust as renowned for his flawlessly executed revisions of classic acoustic blues tunes.
