Most of the ladies assembled here enjoyed their heyday in the Fifties and build on the early pioneering work of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and their like. Many of our featured divas had to deal with drugs, discrimination, disappointment or worse in their lives and we can only offer our respect and gratitude for this hearfelt music, much of it imbued with real-life emotion.
