This album was never part of the plan. Kira Skov had been busy with other projects and was looking forward to a well-deserved break from releasing albums. Since the debut of Kira & The Kindred Spirits on 2002’s ‘Happiness Saves Lives,’ she has been steadily composing, planning, recording, and releasing new records almost annually. Most recently, the spring of 2018 brought with it ‘The Echo of You,’ her gripping recording with songs written about – and to – her late husband, Nicolai Munch-Hansen. Before that, she collaborated with Estonian composer/ arranger/saxophonist Maria Faust on the internationally acclaimed ‘In The Beginning.’
‘I nat blir’ vi gamle’ (“Tonight, We Grow Old”) will be Kira Skov’s 14th album – but again, this wasn’t the plan. The real plan was to immerse herself in a book project. Kira took a break from touring and spent some time alone in the countryside to allow herself to dive into writing. It started as an open-ended, somewhat ambiguous idea, with words about life from her perspective… words that could eventually end up being the bones of a book. But in an ironic twist, working with Danish texts and prose ended up opening a door to a new world of musical and lyrical composition, and unexpectedly gave life to the first pieces that would ultimately appear on this album.
“I found myself sitting with my guitar and writing songs based on the Danish words and texts I had written,” says Kira Skov.
Before long, she had written enough material for at least one album. The process of recording was also different and more experimental than her other recent projects. This time, her collaborator was musician and producer Silas Tinglef.
