An amazing 1959 concert featuring Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Jimmy Giuffre and Kenny Dorham, among some of the best stars of modern & free jazz!! The Lenox School of Jazz was a summer program in Lenox, Massachusetts founded by John Lewis and held from 1957 to 1960. It was one of the first instances where the world's greatest jazz musicians were enlisted as faculty and where jazz was taught to promising young musicians. This release presents the rare and long unavailable 1959 Lenox Annual Benefit Concert. As a bonus, an extremely rare quartet set by Kenny Dorham, who was one of the mentors at the Lenox School.

The Lenox School of Jazz was a summer program in Lenox, Massachusetts that was held from 1957 to 1960. It holds a special significance in the history of jazz education, given that it was one of the first instances in which the world's greatest jazz musicians were enlisted as faculty and where jazz was taught to promising young musicians. Although the Berklee College of Music had already been fo unded by Lawrence Berk in 1945, the quantity, quality and stature of the Lenox teachers has never been equaled. This is the 1959 concert held there, comprising groups named after the musicians who were the students' tutors. As a bonus, we have added a very rare and long unavailable complete quartet set by Kenny Dorham - who took part in the previous concert and was one of the mentors of the Lenox Music School - recorded live in Norway with local musicians in January 1964.

Lenox School of Jazz była letnią szkoła jazzu działającą w latach 1957-1960 w Lenox, w stanie Massachusetts. Dyrektorem jej był pianista i lider Modern Jazz Quartet John Lewis. Zapraszał on jako nauczycieli nie tylko ludzi związanych ale również muzykologów czy kompozytorów i dyrygentów muzyki klasycznej (w 1957 roku gościł tam m.in. Leonard Bernstein). Nagrania zgromadzone na opisywanej płycie pochodzą z finałowego koncertu z roku 1959 gdzie ze swoimi profesorami wystąpili uczniowie, prezentując dorobek twórczej w ramach wakacyjnej szkoły. Muzycznie - to nagranie dokonane na chwilkę zaledwie przed historycznym podziałem jazz na mainstream i free (zapoczątkowany albumem 'Free Jazz' Ornette'a Colemana), który to pogłębiła jeszcze w 1964 śmierć Erica Dolphy'ego - nieodżałowanego 'łącznika' pomiędzy stylami wewnątrz gatunku. Ornette Coleman i jego stały wówczas partner - Don Cherry - grają w ramach zespołu Maxa Roach'a i Johna Lewisa, swingują i nie wychodzą poza zadane im mainstreamowe partie, chociaż zwłaśzcza w przypadku Ornette'a nie sposób oprzeć się wrażeniu iż kostium ten mocno go krępuje. Za chwilkę wszak podąży on właśną drogą. Prócz wyżej wspomnianych wśród uczniów błyszczy jeszcze kilka nazwisk: Ran Blake - znakomity pianista, gra w zespole Kenny Dorhama, klarnecista Perry Robinson błyszczy w grupie Gunthera Svchullera, a gitarzysta Attila Zoller pojawia się grupie kierowanej przez Billa Evansa, Jimiego Halla i Connie Kay'a. I chcociaż jakość tego nagrania nie jest doskonała ale jako dokument czasu jest to nagranie bezcenne!!! Polecam!
