After seven years of the enormous success obtained by the album "Nocturno", the most selled instrumental jazz record ever in Portugal, the Bernardo Sassetti Trio is back with another masterwork. "Motion" opens with a surprising jazz arrangement of a song by Mark Linkous for the alternative rock band Sparkle Horse, and includes an exquisite version of a piece by the catalan classical contemporary composer Federico Mompou. The rest are wonderful suites written by the renowned Portuguese jazz pianist, also internationally recognized as the author of several film soundtracks. Bernardo Sassetti is like a good Portuguese red wine: he gets better over the years. And in "Motion" we find him at the top of his game, either dealing with the black and white keyboard as with a pen. His trio with Carlos Barretto (double bass) and Alexandre Frazao (drums) is the older and most stable combo in this country (more than 12 years now), but the music they present in this CD isn't the freezed result of a closed concept: it developed in astonishing ways, it's more profound and incisive, more mysterious and sublimated. Like with Sparkle Horse, this music can be surrealistic and ethereal, and like with Mompou it deals with secret emotions and with the essentiality obtained by the use of fewer, but fundamental and opportune, notes and sounds. What a fantastic achievement indeed!

Bernardo da Costa Sassetti Pais Urodził się w Lizbonie, 24 czerwca 1970 roku. W wieku dziewięciu lat rozpoczął naukę gry na fortepianie u profesor Marii Fernandy Costa, a następnie u profesora António Menéres Barbosa. Równocześnie uczęszczał do "Academia dos Amadores de Música". Poświęcił się muzyce jazzowej, studiując u Zé Eduardo, Horace'a Parlana i Sir Rolanda Hanna. W roku 1987 rozpoczął karierę sceniczną koncertując w lokalnych klubach, razem z kwartetami Carlosa Martinsa i "Moreiras Jazztet". W zespołach Ala Grey'a, Johna Stubblefielda, Franka Lacy'ego i Andy'ego Shepparda na początku swojej kariery występował na wielu festiwalach. Od tamtej pory, przez 15 pierwszych lat kariery zawodowej, występował na całym świecie u boku Arta Farmera, Kenny'ego Wheelera, Freddy'ego Hubbarda, Paquito D'Rivera, Benny'ego Golsona, Curtisa Fullera, Eddie'ego Hendersona, Charlesa McPhersona, Steve'a Nelsona, razem z United Nations Orchestra i z kwintetem Guy'a Barkera, z którym nagrał płytę "Into the blue" (Verve) nominowaną do "Mercury Awards 95 - Ten albuns of the year". W listopadzie 1997 roku, również z Guy'em Barkerem, nagrał "What love is" z towarzyszeniem London Philarmonic Orchestra, gdzie wystąpił także, jako gość specjalny Sting.

Jest coraz bardziej cenionym kompozytorem, napisał m.in. suity "Ecos de África", "Sons do Brasil", "Mundos", "Fragments (Of Cinematic Illusion)", "Entropé" (na fortepian i orkiestrę) oraz "4 Movimentos Soltos" (na fortepian, wibrafon, marimbę i orkiestrę). Pierwsza płyta artysty, "Salsetti" (Groove/Movieplay), na której wystąpił jako lider grupy, została nagrana w kwietniu 1994 razem z Paquito D'Rivera; druga, "Mundos" (Emarcy/Polygram.......
