2-CD SET
ALL TRACKS PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED!
A complete previously unissued 1958 concert performed in Zurich by of the best formations of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, with excellent sound quality. Featuring Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt. Contains new versions of the classics "Moanin'" and "I Remember Clifford", along with the only existing live version of "Come Rain or Come Shine" by this group, and an amazing trio version of "My Funny Valentine" with Bobby Timmons as the featured soloist.
Includes 12-page booklet

The formation heard here marks the third incarnation of Art Blakey (1919-1990) and the Jazz Messengers, with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt (the first stable formation, in 1954, consisted of Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Doug Watkins, while the second one, in 1957, included Bill Hardman, Johnny Griffin (or Jackie McLean), Sam Dockery and Spanky Debrest). Lee Morgan was only 20-years old when this concert took place in Zurich. Benny Golson, recently featured in Steven Spielberg's movie "The Terminal", is 81 at this writing, and is one of the last living legends of that era. Pianist Bobby Timmons participated on some of the best Jazz Messengers' recordings and contributed such hits of his own as "Moanin'". Besides the individual gifts of each member, the group forms a compact unit with a cohesive sound. "We play modern jazz", explained Blakey during a 1958 interview, "and to understand it you must listen. We study, we rehearse. The Jazz Messengers are very serious about getting the music across to you. If you don't want to listen, maybe the person sitting next to you does."
