Nicolas Humbert and his co-author Marc Parisotto decided to make a further montage of the readings and songs for the album "Roots Run Deep". There are short stories and poems set to music, beautifully interwoven with the music Yusef Lateef had played during the shooting of the film "Brother Yusef". "I return as in a dream of a great American musician" says the old man in a great passage about Lester Young, as sounds and words melt into one song, drawing us closer to the aura of a great jazz era that he himself still incorporates. A true survivor whose roots run very deep indeed. "I'm always making sure that these sounds are coming from the core of my heart."

There was something magical about the recording sessions with Yusef Lateef. We'd agreed to record every afternoon at his home for a week. We could already hear his saxophone in the distance as we approached his house in the woods. Even as we unpacked our gear, Brother Yusef didn't interrupt his playing. It was a form of immersion, which he never left in the hours that followed. His playing was a long prayer. Nicolas Humbert, excerpt from a short text written for the booklet

Il y a la des aventures de la vie et des poemes parfaitement entrelacés avec la musique de Yusef Lateef. "Je reviens comme dans un reve d'un grand musicien américain", dit le vieil homme dans un magnifique texte a propos de Lester Young, alors que sons et mots se fondent en une chanson, nous ramenant a une période du jazz que lui-meme représente encore. "Nie jest to nowa płyta Yusefa Lateefa - całość została zarejestrowana w 2004 roku przy okazji powstawania filmu "Brother Yusef". Ale zawiera historie i muzykę, która – nie cała - powstała dużo wcześniej. Historie - bowiem Lateef spisywał swe opowieści - po części autobiograficzne, po części wymyślone - od lat siedemdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku. Zostały one zarejestrowane - jak również jego improwizacje i piosenki - przy okazji realizacji wspomnianego wyżej filmu.

Nicolas Humbert, reżyser dokumentu oraz jego stały współpracownik Marc Parisotto zdecydowali się zmontować zarejestrowany przy okazji rejestracji filmu materiał miksując improwizacje, piosenki i głos Lateefa, czytającego swoje niezwykłe historie. Powstała płyta mieszająca style i formy, łącząca deklamowaną poezję z muzyką, od której pierwotnie była niezależna. Czasem Lateef zaczyna śpiewać pośrodku wiersza, jakby odnalazł przynależną mu melodię.

Francuscy twórcy płyty wyprodukowali ten album niezależnie od twórczej kreacji samego Lateefa - wizją autorska jego muzyki i spisywanych historii być może byłaby inna. Jednak ocalają oni jego wizję, łącząc muzykę i słowa w jedną całość, jako sztukę przynależną artyście i dopełniającą się nawzajem. Tym bardziej, że do materiału tak dźwiękowego jak i słownego podeszli z niezwykłym znawstwem i pietyzmem. Prawda ocalała bowiem "korzenie jej sięgają głęboko".

Piękna płyta będąca raczej świadectwem o artyście niż samą muzyką."
