Recorded live in Lisbon, at the 2011 edition of the festival Jazz em Agosto, “Snakelust” is the most fantastic upbringing, to this date, of the newest Peter Brotzmann’s electric project, Hairy Bones. The band with Toshinori Kondo, Massimo Pupillo and Paal Nilssen-Love is what you would expect crossing the music played by Last Exit, his assault brigade completed by Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell and Ronald Shanon Jackson, with the one more recently presented by Die Like a Dog, also including Kondo, but with William Parker and Hamid Drake filling the iron-solid rhythm section. There are some substantial differences, anyhow: a more pronounced punk / metal edge of the Aylerian kind of free jazz offered to our ears. No wonder, knowing that bassist Pupillo comes from the noise-jazz Italian group Zu and that Nilssen-Love is the propulsive motor of The Thing, Mats Gustafsson’s mix of the new thing and the stoner rock aesthetics. The documented concert was voted by Portuguese critics as the last year’s very best - now it’s your time to judge.

I turn on my stereo and the music immediately nails me down, it pushes me into my seat. I try to get up and fight against it but I have got no chance. It grabs me by the throat, this is completely physical and breathtaking but it is painful in a comfortable way. I surrender and I start to enjoy this massive attack.

Hairy Bones is Peter Brötzmann (saxes, clarinets, tarogato), Toshinori Kondo (trumpet, electronics), Massimo Pupillo (e-bass), and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) and whenever Brötzmann comes up with such a line-up there are always references to his legendary bands Last Exit and Die Like a Dog (the label makes them as well). And it points backs indeed: as in Die Like a Dog the rhythm group is a well-oiled machine, as in Last Exit there is a strong rock approach especially because Pupillo’s roots .......

"...Hairy Bones to kwartet prowadzony przez dwie zasłużone i uznane muzyczne osobowości - saksofonistę i klarnecistę Petera Brotzmanna oraz trębacza Toshinori Kondo. Ich współpraca ma naprawdę długi staż - pierwszy raz na scenie spotkali się jeszcze w latach osiemdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku. Ale regularniej zaczęli pracować gdy pojawił się kwartet Die Like A Dog (początek lat dziewięćdziesiątych). Hairy Bones jest zresztą jakby odrodzeniem tamtego pomysłu - lub raczej jego elektryczną wersją. Zamiast bowiem głębokiego akustycznego basu Williama Parkera tutaj mamy niezwykle gęstą fakturę basowego podkładu Massimo Pupillo (znany także z tria Zu, OffOnOff czy sekstetu Original Silence). Toshinori Kondo niby ten sam, a jednak inny - w Hairy Bones zdecydowanie częściej (cały czas?!), przetwarza dźwięk trąbki przez elektroniczne filtry i przetworniki, moduluje ton i zapętla frazy. Czasem tylko dodaje pogłos. Najbardziej "tradycyjni" są tu: Brotzmann, grający długą, giętką frazą oraz Paal Nilssen-Love, zawsze wszak będący perkusistą grającym "fizycznie", w najbardziej ekstremalnym tego słowa znaczeniu..."
