It's on. It's overflowing with energy.…
… Albert, Jordan, Abrams and Drake are torrential partners. After an experiment led with the saxophone player Tobias Delius during the Fall of 2010 in Dortmund, and a “Kidd” Jordan eye-opening concert during the Summer of 2011 in New Orleans, Jeff Albert chose to record these very instigations with this very quartet, where he met again with the Bindu instigator, Hamid Drake, and the upright bassist of its third incarnation, Joshua Abrams. Because since Dortmund, the trombone player has made it a habit to experiment on this particular strategy consisting of improvising, indeed, but also of giving a minimum of verbal indications to the improvisers, so they cut across country, and “right away” dive into one of the hearts of the subject matter, in order to approach faster the unknown that awaits them. However, this marking out does not restrain any possible exit, since nothing is written and each player remains free to interpret in his own way these few instructions, which only act as opening guides. Once the space is open, the spinning-tops thrown in, the improvisation follows its natural course and all excesses are allowed…
…Suddenly, there are no more disasters, all promises are kept. Near the quartet's fountain, the lands are neither arid, nor submerged. The musicians have dug irrigation canals into society and the universe, overflowing with their energy.

Poznałem Jeffa Alberta dzięki dwóm wspaniałym płytom, na których miał on przyjemność grać, pierwsza to wydana przez Clean Feed - Lucky 7s "Pluto Junkyard", druga to wydana przez Rogue Art - Hamid Drake & Bindu "Reggaeology". Trzeba mieć niezłego farta aby w podobnym czasie (premiery obu płyt dzieliło zaledwie kilka miesięcy) zagrać na dwóch TAKICH płytach!

Nowoorleański puzonista, improwizator, kompozytor od kilku już lat prowadzi autorski kwartet w składzie Ray Moore na saksofonach, Chris Alford na gitarze, Jesse Morrow na basie i za perkusją Doug Garrison. Jednak dopiero w mistrzowskim składzie nowego kwartetu jego potencjał ujawnia się w pełni. Jeff Albert's Instigation Quartet to obok lidera Kidd Jordan na tenorze, Hamid Drake za perkusją i Joshua Abrams na kontrabasie.
Zespół zawiązał się w 2011 roku, kiedy to po serii koncertów w Niemczech, Chicago i Nowym Orleanie weszli do studia i nagrali w listopadzie tegoż roku materiał na płytę. Siedem utworów, z których dwa są autorstwa nieodżałowanego Freda Andersona, jeden zespołowy i cztery Jeffa Alberta cieszą ucho fana kreatywnego jazzu. Mamy tutaj zarówno wstrząsające psalmy rozpisane na wsłuchane w siebie głosy "The Tree On The Mound", skrzące się improwizatorskimi pomysłami kolejne częśći "Instigation Quartet #1,2,3,6", czy też wyrastające z korzennej, czarnej tradycji, przesycone bluesem, obie kompozycje Freda Andersona - otwierający płytę "Three on Two" i kończący "The Strut". Na marginesie dodam tylko, że płyta rozpoczyna się wg. recepty Alfreda Hitchcocka, prawdziwy jazzowy suspens, "Three on Two" to utwór z pogranicza rytuału, grany tutaj z iście koncertową energią, co w przypadku nagrań studyjnych nie jest wcale tak częste.
Porozumienie między muzykami jest porażające, sekcja rytmiczna gra porywająco, budując struktury rytmiczne z żelazną konsekwencją a Kidd Jordan i Jeff Albert swobodnie eksperymentują z brzmieniami, tempami i nastrojami kolejnych utworów.
