Dragonfly Breath is the name of a quartet formed in 2011, led by two outstanding virtuosos associated with the New York scene - saxophonist Paul Flaherty and trombonist Steve Swell, well-known in Poland. The line-up was completed by violinist C. Spencer Yeh and drummer Weasel Walter, associated with a very heavy but improvised sound.

The album consists of four long improvisations by the quartet, which only rarely - and this is most audible in Swell's parts - refer to the swing tradition. Such is the charm of Flaherty's saxophone music, which emphasizes the sonoristic side of the music more strongly. This, however, creates tension between the frontmen and gives the music a unique, jerky and subcutaneous pulse. Yeh's parts are also a great counterpoint here.

A beautiful recording and - when you look at Swell's album output - somewhat surprising. It's as if he was exploring completely new areas here. Opening his music to completely new experiences and traditions.

Dragonfly Breath to nazwa kwartetu, powstałego w 2011 roku prowadzonego przez dwóch wybitnych wirtuozów związanych ze sceną nowojorską - saksofonistę Paula Flaherty oraz świetnie znanego w Polsce puzonistę Steve'a Swella. Skład uzupełniony został przez skrzypka C.Spencera Yeh oraz kojarzonego z bardzo ciężki acz improwizowanym brzmieniem perkusistę Weasela Waltera.

Na płytę złożyły sie cztery długie improwizacje kwartetu, które z rzadka tylko - i to najbardziej słychać w partiach Swella - odwołuje się do swingowej tradycji. Taki juz urok saksofonowej muzyki Flaherty'ego, który mocniej akcentuje sonorystyczną stronę muzyki. Rodzi to natomiast napięcie pomiędzy frontmanami i nadaje muzyce niepowtarzalny, urywany i podskórny puls. Świetnym kontrakpunktem są tu także partie Yeh.

Piękne nagranie i - jak spojrzeć na płytowy dorobek Swella - nieco zaskakujące. Jakby penetrował tutaj zupełnie nowe rejony. Otwierające jego muzykę na zupełnie nowe doświadczenia i tradycje
