Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra Conductor Antal Dorati
Orchestra Of The Theatre National L'opera De Paris Conductor Manuel Rosenthal
Editor's Info:
Edgard Varese, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy; the most influential musicans of the 20th century, each were composers of genius; innovators of daring and courage, whose work also had a great deal of influence in musical genres outside of the classical field. Edgard Varese devoted his life to a search for a new universe of sounds and the Frank Zappa was his most ardent follower. Varese ideas can be heard on almost any Zappa / Mothers of Invention album "I can't give you any structural insights or academic suppositions about how his music works or why I think it sounds so good. His music is completely unique. If you haven't heard it yet, go hear it."
Zappa (like Charlie Parker and the progressive rock group Yes, who opened their concerts with excerpts from The Firebird) was also a great admirer of Igor Stravinsky. The Rite of Spring caused one of the most notorious scandals in musical history. Never had an audience heard music so brutal, savage, aggressive and apparently chaotic; It hit the public like a hurricane. Apparently the whistling and booing at the premiere was so loud it drowned out the orchestra - yet the work ultimately became one of the most famous compositions in the whole of modern music literature. The furious Antal Dorati version included here is regarded as one of the greatest recordings of this tumultuous work.
