There has never been a Zorn CD like this one! One of the most exciting bands to come out of the wild late night Nublu scene in the East Village, Forro in the Dark combines the driving dance rhythms of forro from Northeastern Brazil with rock, jazz, reggae, folk and country. Together since 2002, they are based in New York and have collaborated with a wide variety of artists, including David Byrne, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cibo Matto. Here they take on some of Zorn’s most lyrical and grooving compositions to create a charming CD of Brazilian-tinged dance music. Endlessly listenable, this is a CD filled with catchy hooks, burning solos, driving rhythms and infectious Zorn melodies, new and old. Produced by Jesse Harris and featuring Brazilian legend Marcos Valle as a special guest.

The music of John Zorn has been performed by Tzadik’s “house” musicians for so long that whatever personal idiosyncrasies the musicians bring to the sessions end up being a foregone conclusion. So it’s up to a band like Forro in the Dark to remind us that, when performed by a different group of people, the music of a composer like John Zorn can be fully realized in an entirely different way.

Of course, I’m not knocking Tzadik preferred roster of New York’s Downtown musicians. Performers such as Mark Feldman, Uri Caine, and Cyro Baptista, trained in classical and jazz, can always be counted on for bringing a certain level of musicianship to a John Zorn recording session. You could go so far as to say that you are guaranteed consistently good results from their performances each and every time. Be it rock, klezmer jazz, or chamber 12-tone classical, Tzadik’s usual suspects give priority to the compositions themselves. Jeśli ktoś ma za sobą współpracę z Davidem Byrne'm, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Atoms for Peace Thoma Yorke'a, Bebel Gilberto, Gal Costą, to musi mieć w sobie coś osobliwego.
Mauro Refosco (zabumba, percussion), Guilherme Monteiro (guitar) i Jorge Continentino (pífanos, flutes, saxophones) tworzący zespół Forró in the Dark jak chyba nikt dotąd spletli ze sobą taneczne rytmy forró z północno-wschodniej Brazylii z rockiem, kreatywnym jazzem, psychedelią, folkiem i avant-popem. Porywający amalgamat gatunkowy sprawił, że na nowojorskiej scenie okazali się jednym z największych odkryć ostatnich lat.

Nie dziwi więc fakt, że trafili właśnie pod gościnne skrzydła Johna Zorna i jego Tzadik Records.

"Forró in the Dark Plays Zorn" to jedenaście oryginalnych kompozycji Zorna, raczej tych bardziej lirycznych, które wpuszczone zostały do zwariowanego brazylijskiego magla.
Zorn oddając swoją muzykę innym wykonawcom nie wymaga od nich szacunku do oryginałów. Z pewnością oczekuje czegoś zgoła odmiennego, i w osobach Mauro Refosco, Guilherme Monteiro i Jorge Continentino to znalazł.
Słychać tutaj z jednej strony punkową dezynwolturę – wpompowaną w osobliwe instrumentarium, z drugiej strony jakąś latynoską miękkość w łączeniu gatunków. Brawurowe, pełne wigoru odczytania zornowskich kompozycji nie chcą usiedzieć w miejscu, narastają i drgają wielością kształtów i nastrojów, ludyzm miesza się z nostalgią, surf jazzowe riffy przełamane zostają soczystą exotic music.
