This is the debut album from the duo of Wacław Zimpel (Hera, Ircha) and Kuba Ziołek (Stara Rzeka, Innercity Ensemble, Alameda Organisation, Kapital). The record entitled simply "Zimpel/Ziołek" consists of four tracks that might surprise those familiar with musicians' previous recordings.

"In December of 2015 I witnessed Wacław perform a solo set in Alchemia club in Kraków. After his concert we discussed the possibilities of working together on some music and not much later we met at the rehearsals, followed by first live gigs under the Zimpel/Ziołek moniker," recalls Ziołek. "I remember that during this time I was drifting away from my free jazz roots and wanted to incorporate some electronics that Kuba already mastered in his projects," adds Zimpel. "Both of us were keen on repetitive structures and this process of defining a common musical ground evolved in a very organic way," he adds.

The tracks that make up their album are rooted in improvisation and it wasn't until Zimpel and Ziołek entered the studio that they organised the sounds into more structured forms. "We often stopped playing when something interesting came into our view and messed with those motifs adding new layers and instruments," explains Zimpel. "The compositions took other forms during our concerts where the process of playing is more dynamic, based on instincts. That's also why you often are unable to see the bigger picture. I think that it's only been in the studio where we managed to take total control over our music," he says.

Contrary to what most Zimpel fans may expect, some of duo's songs do have vocals and these come courtesy of Ziołek. "I decided to paint some abstract pictures with the lyrics. There's no hidden meaning behind them, I just wanted to treat the melodics of words more or less the same as I do with other instruments, choosing specific syllables and matching them with words," recalls Ziołek.

12 października nakładem krakowskiej wytwórni Instant Classic ukazał się album duetu Wacław Zimpel / Kuba Ziołek. Na potrzeby płyty muzycy zarejestrowali cztery premierowe kompozycje, które na pewno zaskoczą wielbicieli ich wcześniejszych dokonań.

“W grudniu 2015 roku przyszedłem na koncert Wacława w Alchemii w Krakowie i po tym koncercie zaczęliśmy rozmawiać o ewentualnej współpracy muzycznej. Nie dalej jak miesiąc później już graliśmy pierwsze próby i koncerty. Oczywiście znamy się z Wacławem dużo dłużej i od dawna jego muzyka wydawała mi się bardzo interesująca” – wspomina początki projektu Ziołek. “To był dla mnie czas dużych zmian stylistycznych. Odchodziłem wówczas od języka charakterystycznego dla free jazzu. Zależało mi na tym, żeby poszerzyć brzmienie o instrumenty elektroniczne, którymi Kuba zajmował się już od dawna. Jego ujęcie elektroniki było dla mnie bardzo inspirujące. Jednocześnie obaj chcieliśmy poeksperymentować ze strukturami repetytywnymi. Cały proces odnajdowania wspólnej przestrzeni muzycznej przebiegał bardzo organicznie” – dodaje Zimpel.

Wspomniane wcześniej utwory, które trafiły na album, mają swoje źródło w improwizacji, jednak na potrzeby nagrania zostały one uporządkowane i rozbudowane. Dzięki temu improwizacja stała się tylko jednym z wielu składników kompozycji. “Zatrzymywaliśmy się, kiedy usłyszeliśmy coś ciekawego i staraliśmy się to zapamiętać. Podczas koncertów dodawaliśmy nowe płaszczyzny i struktury, które udało nam się zebrać w jedną całość w studio” – tłumaczy Wacław. “Utwory ewoluowały na koncertach, szczególnie w warstwie brzmieniowej, z którą jeszcze bardziej mogliśmy poeksperymentować w ramach nagrań. Podczas koncertów procesy są bardziej instynktowne i często brakuje czasu na głębszą refleksję, którą z kolei oferuje praca w warunkach studyjnych. Myślę że dopiero w studio udało nam się zapanować nad materiałem” – dodaje mul.......
