One of the good things happening in the Nineties was the circulation in some festivals of the incredible sax trio formed by Evan Parker, Daunik Lazro and Joe McPhee. Unfortunately, just one recording documented the partnership, a homonymous album released in 1996 by the French label Vand’Oeuvre. For those who’ve been mesmerized by the live encounters of these three giants of improvised saxophone only some “tete-a-tete” CDs served as good consolation, namely “Élan, Impulse”, uniting Lazro and McPhee (1991, In Situ), and the pair “Chicago Tenor Duets” (2002, Okka Disk) and “What If / They Both Could Fly” (2013, Rune Grammofon), with Parker and McPhee dueling. Now, thanks to Clean Feed, we can listen a second time to the three part equation in its entirety – “Seven Pieces” is the reproduction of what Parker, Lazro and McPhee did together at a venue in Willisau, in May 1995. The concert was recorded by the brothers Niklaus and Walter Troxler and found on cassette in a drawer all these years later. An expert in recovering old tapes, the electronic musician Jean-Marc Foussat did the editing, mixing and mastering of the music. For our collective happiness, because what you’ll find here goes deeper in the abstract lyricism testified by the previous and very hard to find release. The British, the French and the American guys were having a fantastic night, and history benefits from that.

"Tak właściwie to nagranie ma nieco archiwalny charakter. Zarejestrowane bowiem zostało dwadzieścia jeden lat temu, podczas koncertu na festiwalu organizowanym przez Niklausa i Waltera Troxlerów w szwajcarskim Willisau. Ale muzyka improwizowana tak naprawdę się niestarzeje – zwłaszcza, gdy tworzą ją instrumentaliści tej miary co Evan Parker, Joe McPhee czy Daunik Lazro. Trudno równocześnie stwierdzić, że projekt ten już jest definitywnie zamknięty. Od dawna co prawda trio to nie koncertuje, ale muzycy grywają duetowe koncerty i wydają takież albumy (Parker z McPhee - “Chicago Tenor Duets” Okka Disk 2002, “What If / They Both Could Fly” Rune Grammofon 2013; Lazro z McPhee "The Cerkno Concert" Klopotec 2016). I chyba kwestią ich zapracowania tylko i trudności zgrania terminów jest brak triowych występów.

W trio mieli z dorobku dotąd jeden tylko album - sygnowana ich nazwiskami płyta, o takim też tytule ukazała się w 1996 roku nakładem francuskiej oficyny Vand'Oeuvre. I od lat jest niedostępna. Teraz oto otrzymujemy nagranie pochodzące z tej samej trasy koncertowej co pierwszy album, starannie zremasterowane i zmiksowane przez wybitnego specjalistę od obróbki starych taśm i nagrań - Jean-Marca Foussat. Płyta przynosi muzykę abstrakcyjną i w pełni improwizowaną, mocną, pełną energii, ale też przesyconą liryzmem (cudowne „Concertino In Blue”) - chociaż akurat ten dla co mniejszych fanów improwizacji może być raczej trudnozauważalny ;). To chyba jeden z najbardziej "europejskich" albumów w dorobku Joe McPhee, który na tym nagraniu wydaje się być najbardziej wycofanym z trójki improwizatorów. Jednak wysunięci na pierwszy plan Lazro i Parker nie pozostawiają odbiorcom chwilki wytchnienia, i dają taki popis inwencji i instrumentalnej sprawności, po którym trudno podnieść się z fotela. Polecam gorąco, chociaż to raczej pozycja dla co bardziej spragnionych wrażeń fanów Evana Parkera."
