In this new opus coming from Sweden, poly-saxophonist Martin Küchen joins the Landaeus Trio, not only adding his instruments to the band led by pianist Mathias Landaeus but also his immediately recognizable personal compositions, full of Scandinavian folk-like melodies and complex African-inspired pulsations. The curious result of this encounter, “Mind the Gap of Silence” is simultaneously more abstract and more melodic than anything done before by Küchen and the Landaeus Trio in their separate ways on the fields of creative jazz. And that is unexpected, considering that abstraction and melodism travel different paths. The emotion is raw, but always in equilibrium with a kind of beauty you can’t describe with words, everything happening as if in slow fire. And no, what you’ll find here has little to do with the several complexions of Küchen’s Angles project. It’s something else entirely, with much to discover and to savor. Who could expect that the Landaeus Trio’s very characteristic mix of passion and introspective subtlety would marry so well with his ideas? Have a good journey…

Szwedzki saksofonista Martin Küchen znakomicie czuje się zarówno w składach rozbudowanych, jak i kameralnych. Stąd zapewne bierze się dbałość o karierę Trespass Trio, ale też powroty do współpracy z formacją Landaus Trio, na czele której stoi pianista Mathias Landaus. W tym roku ukazała się ich trzecia wspólna płyta – krążek „Mind the Gap of Silence”.

Martina Küchena czytelnicy „Esensji” powinni już dobrze kojarzyć. To przecież on stoi za sukcesami All Included („Satan in Plain Clothes”), Trespass Trio („The Spirit of Piteşti”), ale nade wszystko kilku wcieleń big bandu Angles – z dodanymi do nazwy cyferkami 8, 9 lub 10 („Injuries”, „Disappeared Behind the Sun”, „Beyond Us”, „Today is Better Than Tomorrow”). Nie można też jednak zapominać o kameralnym wcieleniu tej formacji, czyli Angles 3 („Parede”), które jest najbliższe tego, co od lat Küchen prezentuje również z pomocą Tria Mathiasa Landausa. Landaus to bardzo aktywny artysta – zarówno muzyk sesyjny, jak i lider. Na czele Tria stoi od dekady i pod tym szyldem wydał właśnie piątą, a trzecią z Küchenem, płytę.

Wszystko zaczęło się od opublikowanego w 2011 roku krążka „Jul pa jazzvis”, na którym Mathiasa wspomagali kontrabasista Kristian Lind oraz perkusista Jonas Holgersson. Taki skład nie utrzymał się jednak długo; niebawem bowiem Linda zastąpił – pochodzący z Finlandii – Johnny Aman, a do współpracy zaproszony został jeszcze… Martin Küchen. W poszerzonym o instrumenty dęte składzie zespół zarejestrował dwa albumy, które pierwotnie ukazały się jedynie w wersjach winylowych: „Four Lamentations and One Wicked Dream of Innocence” (2014) oraz „The Pity of It All” (2016). W 2018 roku materiał z obu zebrano na jednym kompakcie – „Vinyl”. W tym samym czasie dyskografia Landaus Trio wzbogaciła się.......
