As the release of Power Trio (AIR 0040) attests, Asian American creative music is by no means the sole territory of the San Francisco Bay Area. Featuring three of the most inventive, daring, and committed members of Chicago's musical community, Power Trio, with Tatsu Aoki, former AACM chairman Mwata Bowden, and Afifi Phillard, delves into the rich tradition of Chicago's jazz and improvised music culture to create an exciting and unpredictable performance. Recorded live at Unity Temple, IL, during the Creative Music Series, Power Trio takes an approach to improvisation that is informed of the past and relevant to the present to create music that is original and new.
From the initial solo contrabass of Tatsu Aoki and the blues-filled clarinet of Mwata Bowden on "Meant to be..." to the modern-day take on the music of Kenny Clarke and Max Roach by Afifi Phillard on "Our World", Power Trio takes the extremely challenging instrumentation of horn-bass-drums and turns in a performance that utilizes all the resources a trio has to offer. Taking advantage of rhythmic and textural variations, the music on Power Trio is organic, daring, suspenseful, and swinging.
