One of the last remaining living legends of jazz, Ornette Coleman is still touring the world with his music.
He remains as innovative and creative now as he was in the late fifties, when his unique sound first came on the scene. The splendid 1971 concert included on this CD presents Ornette with his celebrated quartet featuring Dewey Redman (with whom Coleman had first recorded in 1968), Charlie Haden (present on the classic 1958 Hillcrest Club sessions with Ornette, Don Cherry, Paul Bley and Billy Higgins and on many of Ornette's LPs recorded since that year) and Ed Blackwell (who first recorded with Ornette in 1960). The Ornette Coleman Quartet's Paris concert was part of the group's European tour that included performances in many countries. Some of these shows were privately recorded and later issued, like those in Belgrade on November 2, 1971, and Berlin on November 5, 1971. The exact date of the Paris concert remains unknown.
Its only previous appearance on record was for a long unavailable bootleg LP.

Przed nami koncert kwartetu ojca free jazzu, pochodzący z okresu, w którym powstała płyta "Science Fiction", przez wielu uznawana za szczytowe osiągnięcie artysty. Zespół, w składzie z nieodżałowanym tenorzystą Dewey Redmanem, napędzany przez pełną werwy, odpowiednio elastyczną sekcję Blackwell/Haden, wypada porywająco (pomimo nienadzwyczajnej chwilami jakości samego nagrania).

Bodaj najbardziej charaktery­styczną i uchwytną cechą twórczości Colemana jest fakt, że pomimo osobliwego, szalenie swobodnego traktowania harmonii, jego muzyka zawsze była pełna naturalnej śpiewności i liryzmu. Tak jest i tu. Frazy altu są głęboko uczuciowe, ale daleko im do ekstatycznych wzlotów i żarliwych uniesień charakterystycznych dla Coltrane�owskiego nurtu free. Raczej urzekają lekkością, ujmują prostolinijnością, wręcz pewną naiwnością (w żadnym wypadku nie jest to zarzut!). Obecna w nich frywolność połączona z nostalgią przywodzi na myśl - najszlachetniej rozumianą - ludową poetykę. Osobną kwestią są dźwięki generowane przez lidera za pomocą trąbki i skrzypiec, które zawsze wzbudzały znacznie więcej kontrowersji niż jego gra na saksofonie. Skotłowane brzmienie blaszanego dęciaka, jak i jazgotliwa wiolinistyka Colemana wnoszą pierwiastek rozwichrzenia, który najlepiej koresponduje z przesterowanym, zmodulowanym przez efekt wah-wah pulsem basu Hadena, w zamykającym płytę "Rock the Clock".
