"Mighty mistress of the contemporary violin takes you further into the sound with Malstrom"
Pauline Oliveros
Mia Zabelka, an Austrian pioneer of electro-acoustic performance and composition, has developed a unique musical language based on the de- and reconstruction of the sonic possibilities of the violin, expanding the instrument with live electronic effects and innovative performance techniques. The violin, and Zabelka's voice and her body, are transformed into sonic objects that are at once primal and organic, screaming, lyrical, explosive and composed.
Mia Zabelka's "automatic playing" is a continuous exploration of sound and music as physical phenomena, constantly pushing back the boundaries in radical and provocative performances and compositions.
"M" stands for Mensch (human being), Machine, Music, and for the primal human sound that forms the basis of music and language. Elementally and etymologically, M stands for water.
Composed, performed and recorded by Mia Zabelka at Amann Studios, Vienna 2011
The instruments played on this album are electric violin, voice, contact microphones, live electronics.
Produced by Zahra Mani
Mastered and mixed by Christoph Amann
Supported by PHONART, part-funded by the EU Culture Programme 2007-2013.
