The guitar has often seemed to take second place to other instruments in jazz, being perhaps more closely associated with other vernacular musics, the blues, pop, later rock. In her new album I Got Strings, award-winning guitarist and composer Eleonora Strino delves back into the great jazz standards, including “I Got Rhythm” and shows that even with just six strings, it’s possible to find rich new variants on the old songs. She’s more than ably assisted by Joey Baron, the most musical of drummers, and by Greg Cohen, whose workbook takes in everything from trad jazz to the avant-garde, Woody Allen to Tom Waits.
With a perfectly balanced trio and a programme of material that will seem familiar but utterly new at the same time, Eleonora Strino seems set to join a long tradition of jazz guitarists that began with Charlie Christian and reached a first peak of creativity with the work of her original inspiration Jim Hall.
Strino is set to move beyond her influences, though. This is a bright and exciting new voice, with personality and feeling as well as highly polished technique. An essential modern jazz album, all the more up to the moment by looking so fondly at the past. (Brian Morton)
Under the supervision of music producer Ermanno Basso, I Got Strings was recorded and mixed in November 2021 by Guy Sternberg at Emil Berliner Studios in Berlin, Germany, and mastered by Danilo Rossi.

JAZZ GUITAR TODAY w cover story wydania z lutego 2020 r. umieścił ją w wąskiej grupie najważniejszych współcześnie gitarzystów obok Petera Bernsteina, Kurta Rosenwinkela i Johna Scofielda.
Tak skrojone trio zdecydowanie warte jest uwagi. Tym bardziej, że muzycy sięgnęli po siedem jazzowych szlagierów, tworzących idealnie skrojoną opowieść, duchem zakorzenioną w bogatej tradycji jazzowej rozmowy, pozbawionej awangardowych eksperymentów z formą.
Eleonora Strino gra na Gibsonie L7 z 1933 r., instrumencie o ciepłym, nieco staroświeckim brzmieniu. W wywiadach gitarzystka wskazuje na swoje inspiracje, przywołując nagrania Barney'a Kessela i Joe Passa.
Na program płyty składają się zarówno ballady, jak "Estate" Bruno Martino, czy "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Harolda Arlena, bardziej zażywne tematy grane w średnich tempach, jak ellingtonowski "I Let a Song Go Out on My Heart" czy wspaniale grany temat z filmu "Il Postino" autorstwa Luisa Bacalova. Język Eleonory Strino, Grega Cohena i Joey'a Barona jest przejrzysty, nie stawia żadnego oporu, pozbawiony jest zbędnych ornamentów.
"I Got Strings" to jazz głównego nurtu, pulsujący jego życiodajną mocą. Wielu wieszczyło jego śmierć, okazuje się, że Strino, Cohen i Baron mają na to inny pogląd.
