Bartłomiej Oleś is one of the most original and recognized drummers and composers on the Polish jazz scene. Author of over two hundred pieces for various instrumental ensembles, including string quartets. Active for over thirty years, he takes up new artistic challenges with constant consistency and curiosity. Cat's Songs - 17 Haiku for Piano is probably the most surprising project in the artist's achievements so far, which can boast of an exceptionally diverse discography, appreciated by critics and the audience. Numerous projects under the Oleś Brothers banner - co-created with his brother Marcin and top names from the world and Polish scene - went far beyond the jazz idiom and the latest project is, in a sense, the culmination of this path.

Cat's Songs - 17 Haiku for Piano is a special album for several reasons. The first and definitely the most surprising is the fact that Bartłomiej Oleś is the first to endorse an album on which he does not perform even a single note as a musician. This task, at the composer's invitation, was undertaken by the exceptionally talented pianist Mira Opalińska. I must admit that Mira's task was not easy, because although it may have seemed simple, it was not at all. It really takes great awareness, humility and the willingness to delve into the music to fully capture its spirit. Following the words of the outstanding Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson: not all classically trained musicians can play simple music properly. Mira did it phenomenally, fully reading my intentions and I am extremely grateful to her for that - explains Bartłomiej Oleś.

The second and most important reason that made the album take this form is the hero decorating the cover. Or, more precisely, the lack of it. The fact of his departure made me sit down at the piano and within literally a few weeks I composed these seventeen miniatures. Liczne projekty firmowane szyldem Oleś Brothers – współtworzone z bratem Marcinem i topowymi nazwiskami ze światowej i polskiej sceny – wychodziły daleko poza jazzowy idiom i najnowszy projekt jest w pewnym sensie ukoronowaniem tej drogi.

Cat's Songs - 17 Haiku for Piano to płyta szczególna z kilku powodów. Tym pierwszym i zdecydowanie najbardziej zaskakującym jest fakt, że Bartłomiej Oleś po raz pierwszy firmuje album, na którym nie wykonuje nawet jednego dźwięku jako muzyk. Tego zadania, na zaproszenie kompozytora, podjęła się wybitnie utalentowana pianistka Mira Opalińska. Muszę przyznać, że Mira nie miała łatwego zadania, bo choć mogło ono wydawać się proste, to wcale takie nie było. Potrzeba naprawdę ogromnej świadomości, pokory i chęci zagłębienia się w muzykę, żeby w pełni oddać jej ducha. Idąc za słowami wybitnego islandzkiego kompozytora Jóhanna Jóhannssona: nie wszyscy klasycznie wykształceni muzycy potrafią zagrać prostą muzykę tak, jak należy. Mira zrobiła to fenomenalnie, odczytując w pełni moje intencje i jestem jej za to ogromnie wdzięczny – wyjaśnia Bartłomiej Oleś.

Drugim i najistotniejszym powodem, który sprawił, że album obrał taką formę, jest bohater zdobiący okładkę. A ściślej rzecz ujmując, jego brak. Fakt jego odejścia sprawił, że zasiadłem do.......
