Along with rum and cigars, the music of Cuba has long proved a hugely successful export. The early decades of the last century saw bands from the island playing for the socialites of New York and Paris, a period when terms like rumba, mambo and cha-cha-cha entered the international vocabulary. More recently, Wim Wenders’ Buena Vista Social Club movie revived interest in the raw, undiluted ritmo latino, and this compiled selection of tracks from this exotic and mysterious island will complete many fans’ musical eduction.
