The story of the Hawaiian slide guitar’s arrival in India is every historian’s dream – a twisting tale of great wonder and subtle mystery. Hawaii To Calcutta: A Tribute To Tau Moe is Pandit Debashish Bhattcharya’s dedication to Tau Moe, veritable musical folk legend and one of the first to introduce the instrument to India’s enthusiastic shores.

Tau (1908 – 2004) was born in Samoa and raised in Hawaii. With his wife and children, Moe travelled the globe for over sixty-one years, undertaking an unbelievable odyssey and igniting leftfield musical fires wherever he fared. Tau originally worked as a steel guitar player at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. In 1927 whilst working at said Waikiki establishment he met Rose Kahou, a singer and dancer. Tau and Rose married and shortly joined Madame Riveiere’s Hawaiians with which they toured to Manila. Within two years, the couple had broken away and were billing themselves as The Tau Moe Family. Their early adventures took them to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Burma and of course India. It was in Calcutta that they would light the musical torch that Debashish Bhattcharya still holds high to this day.

The Moe family lived in India for several years, performing, teaching and collaborating with local musicians all the while. Tau’s mellifluous slide guitar vernacular was indelibly popular with Indian audiences and musicians alike. The former attracted to the group’s undoubtable musicianship, perceived ‘exoticism’ and no doubt leaning on a global interest in colonial Polynesia and the then contemporaneous fad for ‘Tiki’ cul.......

To szczególna pozycja w dorobku Pandita Debashisha Bhattacharya, wybitnego instrumentalisty, konstruktora hinduskiej gitary slide i nauczyciela.
Dzięki swojej niezwykłej postawie i determinacji wykształcił już ponad tysiąc uczniów. Jest autorem kilkunastu solowych albumów, laureatem wielu wyróżnień i nagród (m.in. President of India Gold Medal, 1984; BBC Planet Award, 2005; nominacja do Grammy, 2009). W 2016 r. został nagrodzony prestiżową Songlines Music Awards: Asia & South Pacific. Współpracował w wielu indyjskich i międzynarodowych projektach z tak wybitnymi artystami jak Zakir Hussain i John McLaughlin (m.in. w projekcie Remember Shakti), U. Srinivas, Bob Brozman (płyta „Mahima”).

Płyta "Hawaii To Calcutta" została poświęcona hawajskiemu gitarzyście - Tau Moe, postaci niezwykłej. Był wielkim artystą, nie dbał jednak o rozgłos, wszystko, co robił pochodziło z potrzeby serca. Był pierwszym, który w latach 20-tych XX wieku wprowadził hawajską gitarę do Indii. Grał dla Gandhiego, Chruszczowa, Einsteina, ale również dla Hitlera. Bhattacharya tak wspomina rozmowę z Tau Moe (...) Tau mieszkał wtedy w Dusseldorfie. Grał koncert razem z 12-14 muzykami, śpiewakami i tancerzami. W piwnicy domu, w którym mieszkali, znaleźli ukrywających się tam kilkunastu Żydów. Ubrał ich w hawajskie stroje, dał im ukulele, dołączył ich do swojej trupy i wywiózł ich bezpiecznie z Niemiec. Nigdy nie opowiedział nikomu tej historii. Gdy zapytałem dlaczego, odpowiedział: „Po prostu chciałem to zrobić. Nie robiłem tego dla nikogo. Chciałem ocalić życie ludziom”.

Bhattacharya pracował nad płytą od roku 2004 do 2017 roku. Tak opowiadał Annie Sitko z Etnosystem.pl o nagraniu płyty:
(...) Okazało się, że mój pierwszy nauczyciel był uczniem ucznia Tau Moe i tym samym należał do drugiego pokolenia muzyków grających na gitarze slide w moim kraju. Dowiedziałem się, że Tau był w Indiach w latach 1933-1938 i mieszkał w Kalkucie. Istniał.......
