While discussing an album by legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette, jazz critic Gary Giddins once aptly stated: “Jazz is at bottom a conflict between the will to freedom and the desire for discipline.” He was of course referring to the common situation (in jazz, at least) where musicians work with composed material and stretch it, provide their personal slant with the element of improvisation. But you could argue that even in surroundings where the composed element is discarded, the tension remains. Even improvisation is built on a conflict between what’s possible and what makes sense.
And that not only involves taking risks, but also discipline. The self-described Portuguese ‘power trio’ of Jorge Nuno, Hernâni Faustino and João Sousa actively seeks out this field of friction. It’s what they’ve all been doing for a while. Sousa’s involvement in the collective/label A Besta (and maybe also his love of surreal poetry), Nuno’s membership of psych/improve heavyweights Signs Of The Silhouette and other collaborations, and Faustino’s omnipresence in the improvised/experimental music scene bring some key ingredients to the table, but the way they use these elements is still something else.
It’s a refreshing and – quite often - utterly ravaging tightrope act between being rooted and jumping from a cliff. Headfirst. It’s to be found in the way they create shapes out of sound. The way the album sets off, it also could have ended up in a free-form exploration with a vague psychedelic twist that goes to nowhere in particular. The artistry of excellent musicians that are also perceptive listeners, is also to be found in the way they create form or cohesion without reverting to clichés you can see coming from a mile away.

Krytyk jazzowy Gary Giddins stwierdził kiedyś całkiem trafnie (przy okazji recenzji albumu legendarnego perkusisty Jacka DeJohnette'a), że "w jazz wpisany jest konflikt między pragnieniem wolności a potrzebą dyscypliny". Chodziło mu o całkiem powszechną w jazzie improwizację wokół gotowej kompozycji, tak by nadać jej osobisty wymiar. Wydaje się, że podobne napięcie między swobodą a dyscypliną istnieje również wtedy gdy nie ma żadnej kompozycji. Tutaj konflikt pojawia się między tym, co możliwe, a tym co ma sens.
Wymaga to nie tylko odwagi, ale i dyscypliny, co słychać doskonale w muzyce Uivo Zebra, power trio które tworzą Jorge Nuno, Hernâni Faustino, and João Sousa. Ci muzycy mają już spore doświadczenie w balansowaniu na krawędzi. Sousa, miłośnik surrealistycznej poezji, to aktywny członek kolektywu/wytwórni A Besta. Nuno znany jest głównie z Signs Of The Silhouette, świetnego zespołu psych/improv, a Faustino to wszędobylski muzyk sceny improwizowanej i eksperymentalnej

W tej konstelacji jest coś nowego. Chodzi o sposób w jaki muzycy odnajdują się między osadzonym graniem a rzucaniem się w przepaść głową w dół. Zaskakujące jest również w jaki sposób tworzą formy muzyczne. Początek albumu sugeruje, że ta muzyka mogłaby się równie dobrze rozwinąć w bezcelowy dryf psychodelicznego free-improv. Ale to jednocześnie bardzo uważni słuchacze: tworzą formy i potrafią grać razem w spójny sposób ani razu nie uciekając się do banału.
Słuchacz unosi się wraz z subtelnymi, mieniącymi się figurami Nuno, a sekcja rytmiczna tworzy swego rodzaju wyrzutnię, która katapultuje partie gitary w rejony stratosferyczne. Muzyka nieustannie porusza się w rozmaitych kierunkach, trochę przypominając gwałtowniejsze momenty Signs of The Silhouette, jednak w akompaniamencie potężnego podziemnego pomruku.
Im dalej w las, tym lepiej widać kreatywność tria: zwięzły „Cãibra-Tumulto” jest dźwiękowym granatem, który wypełniają szalone i nieskoo.......
