Burkhard Stangl is a guitarist and composer who works in the field of non-idiomatic improvisation, electronic music and contemporary classical music. He is the founder of the renowned jazz group TON.ART, as well as the chamber ensemble Maxixe, and for many years he also formed the renowned super group of improvised music Polwechsel. In his work he admits to being inspired by rock and pop music from the 60s and 70s as well as the Second Viennese School (Anton Webern) and such trends as improvised music or contemporary classical music (Morton Feldman). Stangl's compositional style comes from a synthesis of jazz and European modern music. He is the author of many compositions for various instrumental ensembles, film music (Gustav Deutsch). He collaborates with David Sylvian, Christian Fennesz, Martin Siewert, Angélica Castelló, Dieb 13 and John Butcher, among others.

Jest założycielem znanej jazzowej grupy TON.ART, a także kameralnego zespołu Maxixe, przez wiele lat tworzył też uznaną super grupę muzyki improwizowanej Polwechsel. W swojej twórczości w równym stopniu przyznaje się do inspiracji muzyką rock i pop z lat 60 tych i 70 tych co Drugiej Szkoły Wiedeńskiej (Anton Webern) a także takich kierunków jak muzyka improwizowana czy współczesna klasyka (Morton Feldman). Jego styl kompozytorski Stangla wychodzi od syntezy jazzu i europejskiej modern music. Jest autorem wielu kompozycji na różne składy instrumentalne, muzyki do filmów (Gustav Deutsch). Współpracuje między innymi z Davidem Sylvianem, Christianem Fenneszem, Martinem Siewertem, Angélicą Castelló, Diebem 13 czy Johnem Butcherem.
