Hilarious Disasters is the new band of Ukrainian pianist, improviser, composer, and journalist Kateryna Ziabliuk, founded in 2023. Originally from Kyiv, the artist studied in Katowice, Krakow, and Milan. She utilizes the language of contemporary jazz in her work, but also draws on elements of traditional music, boldly exploring the cultural heritage of her homeland. A fixture on the Polish jazz and improvisation scene for over five years, she has recorded with artists such as Natalia Kordiak (the album "Pieśń lasu" under the moniker "TANŌK"), the Zygmunt Pauker Trio (the album "Zygmunt idzie na spacer"), and Kamila Drabek and Patrycja Wybrańczyk (the album "Live at Spatif"). She is also a member of O.N.E., one of the most interesting phenomena on the Polish jazz scene of the last decade. Unnatural Root is the debut album by Hilarious Disasters. Kateryna Ziabliuk, the composer of the entire album, weaves together diverse inspirations drawn from Ukrainian folk music, traditional and free jazz, elements of metal, and noise, complemented by inventive use of field recordings. When asked about the musical sources of Unnatural Root, the composer explains: "The folk music on the album comes entirely from Ukraine, specifically from the regions of Bukovina, Transcarpathia, and the Lviv area. The source is the private collection of my grandmother, ethnologist Nadia Ziabliuk. The field recordings for Corto Maltese were made at the Ballarò market in Palermo. The seemingly opposing directions present on the album intertwine through free improvisation, as if in a vast sandbox, where the band has ample space for daring and witty experiments." This allows Hilarious Disasters to be a flexible, open-minded group that, during their exuberant live performances, constantly reinterprets their compositions, searching for fresh, capacious forms. Hilarious Disasters to nowy zespół ukraińskiej pianistki, improwizatorki, kompozytorki i dziennikarki, Kateryny Ziabliuk, założony w 2023 roku. Pochodząca z Kijowa artystka studiowała w Katowicach, Krakowie i Mediolanie. W swojej twórczości korzysta z języka współczesnego jazzu, ale sięga także po elementy muzyki tradycyjnej, śmiało eksplorując kulturowe dziedzictwo swojej ojczyzny. Obecna od ponad pięciu lat w przestrzeni polskiej sceny jazzowej i improwizowanej, miała okazję nagrywać m.in. z Natalią Kordiak (album Pieśń lasu pod szyldem TANŌK), formacją zygmunt pauker trio (płyta zygmunt idzie na spacer) czy Kamilą Drabek i Patrycją Wybrańczyk (album Live at Spatif).
